What a fun email to receive in your inbox:

“Congratulations! You’re a finalist for “Best Employer: Startup” for the 2016 Work Local Awards, a celebration of the best local employers in the Bay Area.”

Not a bad way to start the day.

It turns out, although our founder Malia Everette had no idea what was going on behind her back, a handful of members of her team independently nominated Altruvistas for a 2016 Work Local award. How sweet is that?!

Fast forward a few weeks, and Altruvistas is a Finalist in the “Best Employer: Startup” category.

One Altruvistas team member wrote in her nomination:

“All co-workers at Altruvistas are team players – we all pitch in to get the job done with smiles on our faces. There is no negativity that shrouds this…positive workplace”

Although we’re a distributed team here at Altruvistas, we do assemble on occasion for face-to-face meetings, which often involve delicious food and of course…cocktails☺ And it’s true–whether we’re working face-to-face or not, what doesn’t change is our teamwork and positive attitudes, plus of course our commitment to social justice.

As for the award, whether we win or lose, just being nominated for a Work Local Award…oh, you know the rest.

In all seriousness, it’s not about being the best, because there are so many amazing people in the Bay Area doing great work. Still–it’s nice to be noticed in a sea of local start-ups.

We’ll find out whether we take home the prize at the 2016 Work Local Awards event happening on April 28th — a celebration of some of the best local employers in the Bay Area.

Bay Area fans of all things local

The 2016 Work Local Awards will be a spectacular night of celebration and ceremony to help shine the spotlight on the boutiques, cafes, nonprofits, startups, and all the local employers that make our community great.

The party will bring together local business owners, employees, nonprofits, and community members. You can Meet the 47 Finalists Here. The winners will be announced at the celebration party. There will also be locally-made food and drinks. Tickets are available here.

Like sports, when it comes to business, it isn’t whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game. At Altruvistas we work hard to inspire travelers to engage their passion, explore issues they care about & build philanthropic relationships in a way that is ethical and socially responsible. And we have fun doing it. When you look at it that way—we’ve already won.

Thanks Localwise for recognizing and celebrating the local businesses working hard in the Bay Area–including us!
