Cuba | Art, Music, and Healing in Cuba
Tour Sponsor: Ricky Fishman
The histories of Cuba and the United States have been intertwined for many years. From the 1940s, when Cuba was an exciting holiday getaway for gamblers and other thrill seekers, through its takeover by Fidel Castro and his band of revolutionaries, the relationship between the two countries has been complex. When the US placed an embargo on the country in the early 1960s, the island nation became mostly off-limits to American travelers. The embargo contributed to great hardship for the Cuban people, yet through perseverance, Cuba has survived, and created a unique socio-political system while maintaining its national character.
There is much to experience, see and learn: Colonial architecture and the fleets of 1950s American cars, white sand beaches and tropical mountains, inspired music and dance, and unique educational and health care systems.
On this journey, one of our focuses will be exploring Cuba’s renowned health care system. Cuba’s health statistics, especially when compared with those of other countries in the region, are impressive, and there is free universal health care for all citizens. We will be visiting medical schools, community polyclinics, health research institutes, alternative medical centers, and much more.
In addition, we will be exploring Cuban society through its music and art. Much can be learned about the health of a society by the state of its art, and we’ll meet with local artists and musicians, visiting their studios and watching them perform.
This will be a holistic exploration of contemporary Cuba. We hope you decide to join us on this fascinating journey.
