Cuba | Arts and Architecture Tour of Havana
Explore Cuba’s architectural achievements and Havana’s vibrant and culturally significant art scene. We’ll visit a variety of private homes and buildings, examples of Cuban Deco architecture, and learn about Havana’s historical development and plans for its restoration. We’ll meet and exchange with prominent Cuban architects, artists, and graphic designers, and visit museums and galleries including the National Fine Art Museum, the Decorative Museum, and Fototeca—as well as Muraleando, a vibrant Havana community art project. Our journey coincides with the Havana International Ballet Festival, and participants will have opportunities to attend evening performances. To round off a full program of art and culture, we’ll enjoy live music (the choice is wide!), Afro-Cuban dance, and find time to mingle and feel the pulse of this creative capital.
Rebekah Bowman is a photographer living in Berkeley, CA, and an enthusiastic traveler and Cubaphile. Over the past six years, she has made many trips to Cuba while working on her most recent project, “Portrait of the Cuban School of Ballet,” a photographic study of ballet practice at the National Ballet School in Havana. Her photography has taken her to Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Bhutan, and India. She has covered woman and children’s healthcare in Kenya, the urbanization of the Maasai and Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness policy. Before pivoting to photography, Rebekah studied German and German Literature in Salzburg, Austria, managed two European orchestras in London and Dusseldorf, and taught English in Oaxaca, Mexico.
“I’ve been inspired by Cuba and the many Habaneros whom I’ve had the privilege and pleasure to meet since my first trip to the island in 2012. I’m still learning about Cuba’s art and history—and its present—and look forward to sharing experience and insight with the group.” -Rebekah
