My thirty-four years at the University of San Francisco will soon end. Passionate, compassionate, justice-oriented, smart, fun, wonderful former students like you contributed to a career that exceeded my wildest dreams. Thank you! As one marker of this milestone, Luis Enrique Bazan (Kique) is organizing a special journey to Puerto Rico: The Hidden Colony, January 17-23, 2027.

We are honored to invite you to join a select group of former USFers to share 7 days immersed in Puerto Rican reality, culture, and history. Kique has created a rich program of cultural and learning exchange! We’ll learn how Puerto Rico became a “commonwealth” and what the process of decolonization may look like. We’ll take a walking tour of Old San Juan, visit the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, visit the Piñones Afro Puerto Rican historical community and Mangrove forest, take a bomba dance class, and exchange with grassroots organizations, community cultural projects, and representatives from arts and culture spaces. We’ll also enjoy time in the historical city of Ponce, and, of course, we’ll soak up the vibrant culture, tour the sites, and hit the beach!

I’ve shared learning experiences with many of you in El Salvador, the Mexico side of the US/Mexico border, Cambodia, India, Baja California (cycling 1200 miles!), Spain, Morocco, South Africa, the Philippines, Bhutan, and elsewhere in the United States. On this trip I am NOT the professor or organizer–I’m along for the ride. The trip is invitation only for former students. Our capacity is 15 people and participation is first come/first served.

We are excited to welcome you!
