Romania | Tree Monkey Project Romania Tour
Transylvania is a historical region located in central Romania, bound on the east and south by the Carpathian Mountain range. While most people think of Transylvania as the home of fictitious character Count Dracula, there is something very real and alive that exists in the heart of Romania worth sharing with the world.
Did you know that Romania is considered home to some of the last remaining virgin forests in Europe, and home to wildlife such as brown bears, wolves, and lynx? These forests have been growing for over 300 years in certain places and are a mix of Beech, hardwoods, and softwood trees. Unfortunately, as is happening with other forest areas, the Carpathian forest is under pressure from illegal logging and poaching.
In May of 2017 James Reed worked with a local NGO, Agent Green, and the technology non-profit Rainforest Connection, to set up devices called Guardians on a private forest property in the Carpathian Mountains. These devices monitor the private forest for illegal activities. The RFCx monitoring system protects the forest by providing real-time alerts to forest caretakers when it detects sounds connected to deforestation, such as chainsaws and trucks.
Tree Monkey Project continues to share the beauty of the Romanian forest and create awareness of efforts to save this precious environment via our Romania Tree Climbing Tour. Join us and explore the primeval forests of Transylvania!
