Puerto Rico | Mister Latin Jazz Goes to Puerto Rico
Journey leader Arturo Riera says,
“They say that Cuba and Puerto Rico are two wings of the same dove. Being Puerto Rican on my mother’s side and Cuban on my father’s side, I must agree. I’m excited to host a cultural tour of Puerto Rico, which has been an American island since 1919. Join me and my son, musician and performer Daniel Riera, as we explore Puerto Rico’s ecological and cultural treasures. We will be based in a 4-star hotel in Viejo San Juan.
One thing both islands share is a love of Cuban music. Both Celia Cruz and Tito Puente agreed that what we know as Salsa–dance music synonymous with New York City and Spanish Harlem–is really Cuban music. Puerto Rican music is defined by its Bomba, played on drums made out of barrels, and Plena, played on hand-held frame drums. Like Cuban Rumba, this music comes from the convergence of African and European cultural traditions.
We will get a chance to hear contemporary music on the island, and I’m excited to curate three private concerts for our group with the finest Plena and Bomba groups and a couple of surprises. With each stop we will be making an investment in the local economy and supporting local artists, musicians, cultural centers and restaurants. Join Daniel and me in Puerto Rico April 2025.”
