Tour Sponsor: Edgardo Cambon

Join us in Uruguay for Carnival!

This journey is hosted by artist-in-residence Edgardo Cambon of the salsa band Candela. Born in Uruguay, Edgardo is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his music career in the Bay Area. Edgardo is a percussionist, bandleader, vocalist, composer and educator. He has shared the stage and studio with Latin music legends Chucho Valdez, Eddie Palmieri, Carlos Santana, and many other artists in various Latin music genres. Edgardo is a pillar of the San Francisco Bay Area salsa and Latin music community!

On this journey, we’ll visit the Museo del Carnaval and learn about the event’s history, and exchange with “tamboriles de Candombe” (Candombe drums) maker Lobo Nunez atelier to learn about the history of Candombe and the creation of the drums. We’ll view the Candombe “Llamadas” Parade up close from a very exclusive rooftop, and take a drumming class, a Candombe dance class, and go Salsa dancing.

In addition to all things music, we’ll meet with a cultural anthropologist; take a walking tour of the UNESCO-designated Colonia Del Sacramento; and learn about the Afro-Uruguayan experience. We’ll visit a cheese farm, do a mate tasting, make empanadas, learn about the Uruguayan history of wine, and visit theaters, a craft market, contemporary art spaces, a beach resort, and the alchemists’ city of Piriapolis!

Additional highlights:
* A visit to the FAC (Contemporary Art Museum)
* Exchange with CUAREIM 1080, legendary Candombe group
* Visit to the studio of Luis Alberto Gutierrez, who was recognized by UNESCO with the Award of Excellence for Handicrafts based on Carnaval elements
