Join Dr. Segun Shabaka in Havana for the 42nd Annual Havana Jazz Festival! In addition to jazz-filled evenings, our journey will also have us exchanging with Cuban poets, filmmakers, dancers, artists, and experiencing an architect-led walking tour of Old Havana. We’ll learn about AfroCuban music via a drum workshop; then journey to Matanzas to visit UNESCO World Heritage sites and learn the history of region and the legacy of slavery in Cuba.

An entire day is devoted to AfroCuban Sacred Expressions, where we’ll exchange with Santeras and visit the Black Madonna/Orisha of the Seas. Back in Havana, we will meet with representatives from contemporary community and educational initiatives.

Dr. Segun Shabaka

Segun Shabaka, PhD, is a Brooklyn-based educator, activist, writer and cultural consultant. For three decades, he has curated travel  at Pyramid Productions, bringing groups to Africa and countries in the African Diaspora. He was the Chairperson and Executive Director of the International African Arts Festival, Brooklyn (1971-2015). Dr. Shabaka has served as co-chair of the New York chapter of NAKO: the National Association of Kawaida Organizations, and was an educator, editor, and executive director at the Brooklyn-based pan-African cultural organization The East/Uhuru Cultural and Educational Center, which was a strong presence in the 1970s and 80s, and the subject of the 2022 documentary “The Sun Rises in the East.”
