Deadline Extended for Art-themed Trip to Cuba This February

If your New Year’s resolution involves a trip to Cuba, then you’ll want to read this.

Altruvistas and ArtCorps have teamed up to create Culture and Arts for Social Change in Cuba – a journey that will take participants on an art-themed journey through the streets of Havana, Cuba on February 11-19th, 2016. And for those interested–the deadline to sign up for this 9 day cultural & personal Cuba journey just got extended to January 11, 2016.

About the Trip

This people-to-people learning journey to Cuba will focus on the country’s dynamic culture and arts scene through the lens of ArtCorps’ framework and experiential methodology of individual empowerment, community development and systemic change.

For those unfamiliar– ArtCorps seeks to build a vibrant, just and sustainable world by reconnecting humankind to their innate creative capacity. This trip is an opportunity to experience ArtCorps’ unique arts-based approach to personal and social transformation while immersed in Cuban art, history and culture.

Now is the Time

With the loosening travel restrictions, now is a great time to travel to Cuba, before the flood gates open and things inevitably change–for better or worse.

Aryeh Shell, Education and Training Director of ArtCorps, says, “My hope is that the easing of travel restrictions to Cuba will allow for a greater cultural exchange between Cuban and US artists and for the Cuban arts scene to flourish with an increased flow of economic resources and tourism.”

One can hope.

Signs of that are already popping up, as US collectors and curators dash to Cuba amidst the diplomatic thaw.

Aryeh believes, “U.S. citizens have so much to learn from the resilience, creativity and response of Cuban artists to the economic and political challenges of the embargo, as well as their hopes and intentions for the future.”

About the upcoming journey to Cuba, she looks forward to bringing participants to meet with a diverse spectrum of artists and arts organizations — from photographers, architects, writers, muralists, dancers, theater artists and musicians – to understand how they have used their craft to engage Cubans in action for social and ecological justice.

When asked what might surprise participants about this trip, Aryeh said, “Participants may be surprised how deep we are able to go – not only in discovering the Cuban arts activism scene but in our own individual and collective inquiry –in just nine days!”
